Kept Among the Beautiful Things

She sat beside the gold and the fruit and the porcelain, and understood, without bitterness, that she was one more object in an arrangement someone else had composed.

This is perhaps the most honest artwork in the collection. It does not soften what it shows. She has been placed — as women of her position were placed, as objects of beauty were placed — within a composition designed by someone else, for someone else's pleasure, to satisfy someone else's idea of what abundance looks like.

And yet. Look at her again. The eye that looks directly at the viewer here is not asking to be admired. It is asking to be seen. There is a distinction so radical it changes everything about the artwork — the difference between an object in an arrangement and a consciousness temporarily occupying an arrangement while waiting for it to end.

She is not the porcelain. She is the one who noticed she was placed beside the porcelain. That noticing is the entire artwork. That noticing is the beginning of everything that comes after.
