The Hour No One Watches

This was the only hour that belonged entirely to her. She did not perform it for anyone, which is precisely why no one ever made an artwork of it — until now.

The dusk hour. The hour between the end of being publicly present and the beginning of the evening's obligations. The hour that falls through the cracks of every formal account of a life like hers — because it was never witnessed, never recorded, never considered worth making an artwork about.

She spent it as she chose. The artwork does not tell us exactly how — and that silence is deliberate, because it is the only silence she was ever given. We are shown the quality of the light, the specific stillness of a room from which the audience has finally departed, and the particular posture of a woman who has, for the span of one hour, stopped being watched.

A creature can spend all day being arranged, and still find one private hour that belongs to no one's eye but her own. This artwork is that hour. The only one. And the fact that it was never made before this moment is the most truthful thing the collection says about what it cost to live her life.
