The Inextinguishable

The cathedral had been empty for a hundred years before she arrived. The stones had absorbed the prayers of people long dead. The windows had lost their glass. Everything had collapsed that was capable of collapsing. Only the chandelier remained lit — stubbornly, incomprehensibly, burning with the particular warmth of things that refuse to accept that their purpose is finished.

She understood she was the same. Not the ruin. The chandelier. This is the critical distinction the artwork makes and the one most viewers take longest to arrive at. The ruin is the collapsed structure — the relationship, the career, the version of the life she had carefully built around an idea of herself that was never quite true. The ruin can fall. She has watched it fall.

What did not fall is the thing that was never the structure to begin with. The light inside her has no relationship with the walls around it. It burns in ruins exactly as it burns in cathedrals — with the same constancy, the same warmth, the same absolute indifference to whether it is being witnessed.

The chandelier did not require the cathedral. The chandelier only required itself. She understood she was the same. The ruins did not diminish her. She illuminated them.
